José Luis Martinat’s Artistic Exploration of Materials and Cultural SymbolismGallery Nosco is thrilled to present an exhibition featuring the works of the renowned artist José Luis Martinat from Lima. Martinat’s artistry is characterized by his adept use of various materials, including film, drawing, photography, writing, and sound. Through his artistic approach of appropriating, manipulating, and distorting pre-existing materials, he breathes new life into them, generating fresh possibilities for associations and interpretations. This process reflects his fascination with images as artificial creations and how reality finds expression through them.In recent projects, Martinat has ventured into intervening with symbolic materials from Peruvian culture, such as canvas and brick, adding depth to his exploration of social, political and cultural significance.Jose Luis Martinat participated in the Sharjah Biennale in 2009 and held significant exhibitions at esteemed institutions like the Telefonica Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in Lima during 2013. His works have been showcased at renowned locations like the Malmö Museum in 2008, the Wysing Art Centre in Cambridge in 2007, and the Lima Art Museum (MALI) in 2006 and 2008.Furthermore, José Luis Martinat has collaborated on compelling projects alongside his brother José Carlos Martinat. Together, they have worked with prominent institutions such as the Peréz Art Museum in Miami (PAMM) in 2018, the MoMA in New York in 2017, and the TATE Modern in London in 2013.The exhibition will coincide with Brussels Gallery Week end and will run from the 04th September to the 19th October 2024.
